Request an Interpreter

- Identify patient’s language. If unknown, please use the language card.
- Schedule interpreters by completing the interpreter request form online, by email or by fax to 47924, at least 24 to 48hrs in advance. Click here for the Interpreter Booking Form.
- For Deaf and Hard of Hearing patients schedule in advance by calling our department (310) 267-8001 our using the Interpreter Booking Form.
- For unforeseen medical interpreter needs during office hours, contact us at extension 78001.
- Off hours and holidays, contact the page operator at (310) 825-6301.
- Please contact our office once the provider is ready to see the patient.
Our department will arrange an interpreter either face to face, over the phone (for spoken languages) or video call and will keep you updated. Priority is given to emergency situations, then to scheduled appointments, and same day requests.

Information you will need when calling interpreting services
- Name of the person who is calling
- Extension/phone # of the location where the patient will be seen
- Last & first name of the patient
- Specific clinic name where the patient will be seen (ex. Family health, medical specialty suites, neurology, etc.)
- Location of the appointment (ex. 100, 200, 300 medical plazas ) & room #
- Patient id #
- Name of the doctor and/or nurse, who will be seeing the patient
- Estimate duration of appointment
- Time of the appointment

Who is a Limited English Proficient Individual?
An LEP individual is a person who is unable to speak, read, write or understand the English language at a level that permits him or her to interact effectively with care providers.
Helping patients exercise their right ensures:

American Sign Language
Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)
- Title II and Title III of the Americans with Disabilities Act covers places of public accommodation and public entities, regardless of whether that entity receives federal financial assistance
- A public accommodation shall furnish appropriate auxiliary aids and services where necessary to ensure effective communication with individuals with disabilities
Aids and services include:
- Qualified interpreters

- Telephonic device for the deaf

How to communicate with deaf patients
- If clinics need to contact deaf patients, they may do so by dialing 711(Relay Service)
- Patients can contact clinics directly for appointments via TDD, e-mails, and another person
Deaf & Hard Of Hearing Patients
- Sign language and oral interpreters, TDDs, and other services are available free of charge, to ensure effective communication between staff, patients and patients’ families.
- UCLA currently has an American Sign Language (ASL) Medical Interpreter on their staff and contracts for other communication support services as needed.

Served by UCLA staff of in-house medical interpreters. Schedule medical interpreters by fax or calling our phone extension, please contact us at least 24 to 48hrs in advance for encounters such as:
- physician or therapist scheduled appointments
- scheduled tests
- to get consents for scheduled procedures
- inpatient consults
- physician rounds
- family meetings
For unforeseen medical interpreter needs during office hours please contact us. For off hours, contact the page operator of your facility. Medical interpreters will be assigned as needed, after confirmation that the patient has arrived and the provider is ready to see him/her.
