Event Description

This is the second of two consecutive Saturdays.
Participants may arrive as early as 9:30 a.m. for coffee, juice, water, and light refreshments.
This workshop explores the body and makes meaning of it through art. Art gives us a metaphorical language for telling the body's story. The therapeutic value of the experience will be enhanced by its focus on the self that emerges in the process of art-making and opportunities for sharing. The symbolic creations and associated insights will encourage mindfulness in making life choices for well-being. A wide range of art materials will be available for the creative process.
Pre-registration is required.
Individuals must register for the whole series. We recommend immediate registration for those who are interested because there is only room for 15 participants. Individuals should only register if they can attend all three sessions, because each session builds on the previous one.
Instructions for registration online or by mail can be found at www.uclartsandhealing.net You can get also get instructions for registration by mail by calling 310-452-1439. Checks must be received in order for registration to be complete. If the class becomes full, pending registrants will be notified and removed from the roster to allow space for others who wish to register online.
Special instructions to participants:
In order to tailor this workshop to the participants as best as possible, the instructors would appreciate hearing from registrants in advance of the workshop about what they hope to get from the workshop and any issues with their body - particularly if there is a previous history of body dysmorphism. Please submit all comments via email to www.uclartsandhealing.net We will be documenting everything for educational and grant acquisition purposes. Participants will be asked to complete a photo release form when they arrive for the first session, with the option to decline being photographed if they are uncomfortable.
The goal of this workshop is physical well-being; therefore, we encourage participation by individuals who are trying to mastermind their own health and wellness, including those who have chronic medical conditions. Prior experience with art is not necessary.
Art has been a vehicle for expression of physical, psychological, and spiritual issues throughout human history because of its power as a source of information.
Week I -The Body of Experience
Participants will create an image/artifact that explores how they currently feel about their bodies, and will share what emerges for them. They will take their pieces home after class and, during the following week, reflect upon how they would like to see their bodies differently.
Week II -The Body in Transformation
Participants will integrate into their previous work how they would like their bodies to be different and literally transform the piece that was created. They will respond to the image/artifact and dialogue with it. Participants may bring some additional art materials from home to incorporate symbolically into their work.
Week III - The Collective Body
Participants will ponder their artifacts and share their meaning with one another. The discussion and emerging common themes will serve as the inspiration for a group creation, or collective body experience.
