The Pulmonary Thromboendarterectomy Program at UCLA consists of a multidisciplinary team of cardiologists, cardiothoracic surgeons, pulmonologists and interventional radiologists who offer pulmonary thromboendarterectomy (PTE) to patients with chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension.
PTE removes the life-threatening blood clots—emboli—from pulmonary arteries to restore blood flow to the lungs. The surgery can provide a cure for pulmonary hypertension due to chronic pulmonary thromboembolic disease by restoring normal blood pressure in the pulmonary artery, and the procedure reduces right-heart failure. The ability to exercise is remarkably improved. PTE can prolong patients’ lives, and the quality of their lives.
