Dedicated to assisting children and their families to promote positive emotional and behavioral health. The ABC Program for the Enhancement of Achievement, Behavior, and Cognition at the Neuropsychiatric Institute at UCLA is a short-term integrated day treatment program for children between the ages of 3 to 12 years of age with internalizing and externalizing problems. All of our programs are based upon the most current evidence-based research on the effective treatment of children.

Anxiety Disorders including OCD

Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASDs)

The Program
UCLA ABC is a five-day a week (7:30am to 3:00) year round program with a high staff to child ratio. All aspects of the program are integrated and coordinated to create an individualized, comprehensive, multidisciplinary, and therapeutic environment. UCLA ABC will provide your child with:
A behavior program designed to address your child's specific needs

Recreation therapy
Social skills instruction and social skills groups
Medication evaluation and intervention

Psychological testing consultation

UCLA ABC will provide your family with:

Therapeutic Environment
The UCLA ABC is a child and family friendly program with multiple developmentally appropriate child-therapy rooms, family meeting rooms, a reinforcement center, and school classrooms. All areas are appropriately decorated and furnished for the developmental and activity needs of the children. Children also have supervised access to outdoor recreation decks and a swimming pool. The university campus and Westwood Village are often used for field trips.
The staff of the UCLA ABC
Our Medical Director, Bhavik Shah, M.D., is a Child Psychiatrist with expertise in developmental disabilities and behavioral genetics. Our Program Director, Mary J. O'Connor, Ph.D., ABPP, is a developmental psychologist with a Diplomate in Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychology. Together, Drs. Shah and O'Connor have over 30 years of experience working with children in a variety of clinical settings. Our skilled multidisciplinary staff includes an educational consultant, masters level teacher, social worker, occupational therapist, recreation therapist, speech and language pathologist, and Nurse specialists. Each child is assigned a care coordinator and a primary nurse who work directly with the child and the family.
The Medical Center has multiple medical specialists who are available for special consultation as needed (pediatric neurology, genetics, cardiology, psychopharmacology).
