Thoracic Oncology Program

The UCLA Thoracic Oncology Program (TOP) is designed to provide a comprehensive approach in the prevention, detection, treatment, and research of all aspects of thoracic malignancies.

Patients referred to the Program are evaluated by a multidisciplinary team composed of thoracic surgeons, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, and pulmonologists working with research, nursing, and support staff.

Our mission is to provide the best patient care through promoting a multidisciplinary team approach, practicing evidence based medicine, providing cutting edge treatments, and making new discoveries in chest cancers.

At UCLA, there is a weekly conference where new and established patients with complex thoracic malignancies including lung cancers are presented.  From these discussions, our multidisciplinary team makes a treatment recommendation specific for each patient situation.

In the UCLA Medical Plaza, a combined TOP Clinic composed of healthcare professionals from thoracic surgery, medical oncology, and radiation oncology provides expert evaluation of patients with thoracic malignancies, including lung cancer, on the same day if indicated.

Research studies involve the treatment of thoracic malignancies, clinical trials in prevention, and trials of promising biologic and targeted therapy in combination with chemotherapy.

We treat the following thoracic malignancies and chest tumors:

  • Airway tumor
  • Chest wall tumor
  • Esophageal cancer
  • Lung cancer
  • Lung metastasis
  • Lung nodule
  • Mediastinal tumor
  • Mesothelioma
  • Sarcoma
  • Thoracic malignancy
  • Thymus and thymic cancer
  • Tracheal cancer
