Dear UCLA Medical Group physician,

We are in the process of updating the physician information in the database we use to refer patients to doctors when either they or referring physicians call UCLA's Physician Referral Service (PRS - 1 800 UCLA MD-1). Please help us make sure your correct areas of interest are listed in our database so we can continue to refer you appropriate patients.

How to Update Your Area of Interest
At your earliest convenience, simply log on to http://prs.mednet.ucla.edu/aoi
Please enter under comments if you have directorship appointment (i.e. Director of Bariatric Surgery, Director of Cardiomyopathy Center).

What is PRS?
UCLA's Physician Referral Service (PRS), also known as the Call Center, facilitates:

  • new referrals from outside referring medical groups (RMG) and from non-UCLA physicians
  • self-referrals (SELF) from community members who do not need an authorization from their health insurance companies

  • What services does PRS provide for referring physicians?
On average, PRS currently receives 1,000 new referrals each month via fax from outside referring medical groups. Since most of these referrals do not indicate a specific physician, our PRS nurses identify the appropriate physician, based on many criteria, including appointment availability. Then, PRS:

    • obtains proper authorization from the payer
    • acquires medical records from the referring physician, when needed
    • enters information for a future encounter, including a UCLA ID number, authorization number, payer information, and referring physician information
    • transfers the patient call to the appropriate clinic to make an appointment
    • sends the authorization and/or medical records to the clinic
    • mails a thank you letter to the referring physician
    • sends a letter to the patient that includes the UCLA doctor's information and a map

What services does PRS provide for self-referrals?
Each month, an average of 1,200 potential patients either call our toll-free number or email PRS requesting a referral to a UCLA physician. When these requests are received, PRS:

    • triages the call or email
    • accesses a referral database that is programmed to fairly rotate referrals to physicians
    • enters information for a future encounter, including a UCLA ID number and payer information
    • transfers the patient call to the appropriate clinic to make an appointment
    • sends a letter to the caller that includes the UCLA doctor's information and a map

If you have any further questions, please feel free to call us at (310) 301-5383.

    Sincerely,

    Mila Krueger, R.N.
    Director, UCLA Physician Referral Service
