The Center for Functional Bowel and Motility Disorders specializes in the diagnosis, therapy and research of functional disorders (such as non-cardiac chest pain, non-ulcer dyspepsia, biliary dyskinesia, and irritable bowel syndrome) and motor disorders of the gastrointestinal tract (such as gastroesophageal reflux disease, gastroparesis, chronic constipation, and anorectal incontinence).
Patients are referred to the center either for a comprehensive evaluation (including medical, behavioral, and dietary assessment) or for a specialized diagnostic test.
Diagnostic modalities include state-of-the-art equipment for prolonged ambulatory monitoring of gastrointestinal motor and secretory function and provocative testing of sensorimotor function. The center provides eligible patients with the opportunity to participate in new drug treatment protocols and novel therapies such as biofeedback training of gastrointestinal function, stress management, and behavioral therapy.
The center works in close collaboration with basic scientists at the UCLA/CURE Digestive Disease Center to apply the rapidly evolving concepts of brain-gut interactions to clinical problems.
