The Department of Radiation Oncology treats patients with cancer and selected diseases. Radiation therapy may be used alone or in combination with surgery and/or chemotherapy. The aim of using radiation is to achieve cure with the preservation of normal anatomy and function, or, when cure is not possible, to maximize palliation.
Some specific components of a coordinated radiation therapy program include:
- Multispecialty consultation clinics
- Subspecialization of physicians in neuro-oncology, gynelogic-oncology, urological oncology
- External beam irradiation, involving 3D imaging of the tumor to be treated and computer-assisted design of a plan to localize the dose within the tumor. Treatment usually requires sophisticated shaping and direction of x-ray beams, sometimes also requiring modification of the intensity of dose delivery (IMRT)
- Direct implantation into tumors of radioactive seeds or needles primarily for cancers of the prostate, uterus, or head and neck
- Stereotactic radiosurgery as a single dose or multiple smaller dose "fractions" for tumors of the brain, head or neck
- High Dose Rate (HDR) brachytherapy - internal radiation treatment for localized cancers including prostate, breast, GYN (cervix, uterus, vaginal), head & neck, esophagus & lung, anal/rectal, bile duct and skin
- Research programs to improve treatment concepts
- Social services and support groups
