UCLA researcher receives international medical honor

Dr. Stephen G. YoungDr. Stephen G. Young, (Westwood), professor of medicine in the division of cardiology at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, was one of two scientists chosen worldwide to receive the 2010 Ernst Jung Medical Award from the Jung Foundation for Science and Research. Young, 57, is being recognized for his research advances into lipid metabolism and his work on the role of farnesylated prelamin A in causing Hutchinson-Gilford progeria syndrome, a pediatric disease that leads to hair loss, heart attacks, strokes and other aging-related conditions. The foundation will present the award to Young at a May 21 awards ceremony in Hamburg, Germany. As part of the award, Young will receive $215,000 to further his research. Initiated in 1967 by German businessman Ernest Jung and presented since 1976, the award is given for pioneering research in medicine.
