Diagnostic and Interventional Catheterization Program

UCLA Division of Pediatric Cardiology - Stereotaxis Lab at Mattel Children's Hospital UCLA.

Over the past five years, our division has performed on average 650 congenital transcather diagnostic, interventional and EP cases per year. During this period, there have been about 100 ablations per year, 40-50 devices per year and 500-510 cardiac catheterizations per year. In addition to several state of the art GE and Siemens labs available for EP studies, there is a dedicated pediatric GE Inova biplane cardiac catheterization laboratory exclusively for pediatric cases. All equipment was purchased new for the opening of the Ronald Reagan Medical Center in August of 2008.

The interventional catheterization program features dedicated interventionalists at UCLA, Dr Daniel Levi and Dr Juan Alejos, as well as an interventional fellow, and multiple cardiologists from outside from UCLA. In the past 5 years, 2668 pediatric catheterizations have been performed at the Mattel Children’s Hospital UCLA (about 504 per year). In addition to cases, performed in the cath lab, we have also performed hybrid VSD closures in the operating suites as well as bedside balloon balloon septostomies in the NICU.

UCLA Division of Pediatric Cardiology: Catheterization Lab, Dr. Daniel Levi, left, and Dr. Leigh Reardon,(fellow) right. Our cath lab regular performs pulmonary valvuloplasties, aortic valvuloplasties, ASD and PDA closures in addition to VSD closures, coronary artery fistula occlusions, coartation and pulmonary artery angioplasty and stenting. We continue to perform a number of diagnostic and surgical interventions to support our surgical program including diagnostic and interventional catheterizations such as balloon atrial septostomies. Despite a large transplant population, we are doing many fewer surveillance biopsies and most of our cases are interventional catheterizations.

With the help of Dr Jamil Aboulhosn, a large number of interventions for adults with structural heart disease are also performed in our pediatric cardiac catheterization laboratory. These interventions have included all structural procedures from routine valvuloplasties and coarctation stents to hybrid VSD closures. The large adult congenital population has added greatly to the volume of interventions in our cath lab.

UCLA Division of Pediatric Cardiology: Catheterization Lab - Fellow , Dr. Leigh Reardon. The catheter-based active at Mattel Children's Hospital UCLA has also generated a large clinical and bioengineering research program. Our laboratory has participated in several FDA trials and has generated a number of clinical publication describing new devices and techniques. The Active Materials laboratory at UCLA has developed transcatheter stents and heart valves made from nanosynthesized thin film nitinol. These devices are being tested in the Rigler Center catheterization laboratory at UCLA.
