This comprehensive, multidisciplinary center focuses on the study and treatment of small bowel disorders, including:
  • Small bowel bleeding - AVM, HHT/OWR syndrome, small bowel tumors
  • Malabsorption - Celiac disease, tropical sprue, ischemia, overgrowth
  • Inflammatory bowel disease - Crohn's disease
  • Pseudo-obstruction
  • Functional bowel disease
  • HIV enteropathy
  • Small intestinal malignancy - adenocarcinoma, carcinoid, lymphoma

Other sub-specialties and medical technologies offered by the Center include:
  • Gastroenterology/Endoscopy - push enteroscopy, capsule endoscopy
  • Surgery - intra-operative enteroscopy
  • Radiology - enteroclysis, small bowel follow through, CT, MRI, PET scan
  • Nuclear medicine - tagged RBC scan
  • Motility - small bowel motility and transit
  • Pathology - histopathology


UCLA Medical Center is among the first in the nation to use capsule endoscopy for the early detection and diagnosis of gastrointestinal tract disease, including obscure bleeding, Crohn's disease, malabsorption or celiac disease, and intestinal tumors. This non-invasive diagnostic exam provides and enhanced level of visual imaging, improving the chances of accurate diagnosis.
