The UCLA Geriatric-Oncology Clinic provides comprehensive cancer care to patients over 70 years old, focusing primarily on breast, prostate, lung and colon cancer. Individualized cancer treatment plans are developed for each patient. If a comprehensive geriatric assessment by a Geriatrician is not completed before referral to the clinic, patients will be referred to the UCLA Division of Geriatrics for assessment. ( For more information regarding Geriatric Medicine, please see Department of Medicine, Geriatric Medicine page.)
Medical problems common in older patients---dementia, delirium, vision or hearing impairment, gait and balance difficulties, malnutrition, incontinence, depression, osteoporosis, and sleep disorders-- can complicate cancer care and increase chances for side effects, adverse outcomes, and diminishment of a patient's quality of life. Conversely, these medical problems can worsen because of certain cancer treatments. The Geriatric-Oncology Clinic considers these and other issues when developing a treatment plan, and discusses fully with the patient and family important issues about safety in the home, social and spiritual issues, and end-of-life decision-making.
