The Department of PediatricsPediatric Critical Care |
Mattel Children's Hospital at UCLA has a 20-bed state-of-the-art Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) with two critical isolation beds. The unit is fully equipped for hemodynamic and invasive as well as noninvasive monitoring. A pediatric intensivist provides coverage for all ICU patients 24 hours a day. The unit is also staffed by specially trained pediatric intensive care nurses. The spectrum of patients seen includes patients with respiratory failure, circulatory failure, sepsis, meningitis, near drowning, head trauma, multisystem failure, multiple trauma, and unusual or perplexing diagnoses.
Postoperative cardiac surgery and organ transplant patients are also cared for by the team, which is responsible for all patients, medical or surgical, in the PICU.
The Department of Pediatrics can assist referring physicians and hospitals in arranging emergency transport to the intensive care unit for their patients. The medical center has an active transport program involving ground, helicopter, and fixed-wing transports allowing patients to be transferred here quickly from all over California and the Southwest.
