The Department of Pediatrics

Pediatric Infectious Diseases

OUR MISSION:

Infectious diseases are the most common and most important of all pediatric problems throughout the world. Here at the division of Pediatric Infectious Diseases at Mattel Children's Hospital UCLA and the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, we are committed to improving the health of today's and tomorrow's children by working to better diagnose, more effectively treat, and prevent infectious diseases.

WHAT WE DO:

We offer consultations, inpatient and outpatient diagnosis, and treatment for acute and chronic infectious diseases, including sexually transmitted diseases, perinatal infections, and HIV infections. Please see our Care-4-Families page for information on our comprehensive HIV/AIDS program.  In addition to our clinical work, our world-renown faculty are also conducting research in a variety of research areas, including antiviral agents, antiviral resistance, viral and bacterial vaccines.  We also offer a Fellowship Training Program, which is a three-year program aimed at training academic pediatricians in the sub-discipline of infectious diseases.

Our fellowship program is primarily based at the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center but has the opportunity for clinical rotations at four different UCLA affiliated programs (UCLA-Harbor Medical Center, Children's Hospital Los Angeles, Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and Venice Family Clinic). At the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, we have five full-time infectious diseases attending physicians. The program is aimed at training academic pediatricians in the sub-discipline of infectious diseases. Therefore, our program is research oriented with only approximately a third of the time devoted to clinical infectious diseases. We would be most happy to consider your application if you are interested in a career in academic pediatrics. A commitment of three years is necessary for adequate training and to be a candidate for boards in pediatric infectious diseases.

Program Details

Our program consists of three to four months per year of clinical rotations in infectious diseases at the UCLA Medical Center and potentially at one of the affiliate hospitals. The mixture of patients we see includes immunocompromised patients (transplant recipients, HIV, cancer patients) with complex infectious disease problems and common infectious diseases (meningitis, pertussis, osteomyelitis, etc.), providing an excellent clinical experience. As part of our program, fellows also rotate through clinical microbiology and virology. We also encourage fellows to participate in courses in statistics, bacterial and viral pathogenesis, and epidemiology, which are offered by the Department of Microbiology and Immunology of the David Geffen School of Medicine and the School of Public Health. We have weekly conferences on pertinent topics in infectious diseases. We have a close working relationship with basic science faculty and this is an incredible resource for the development of research projects.

We expect each fellow to choose a research project.  This may be clinical, epidemiologic, or basic laboratory investigation and is supervised by the guidance of one of our faculty members.  We have an excellent track record in training fellows who have gone on to successful academic careers.

With respect to foreign medical school graduates, clinical fellows who are not citizens of the United States must obtain a J-1 visa from the ECFMG.  In addition, if you have completed two years of training in the United States at an ACGME-accredited facility, you must have a California Medical License prior to commencement of fellowship.  Please note, however, that it may take up to six months to obtain a California Medical License.

Application for Fellowship

We use the ERAS system for all application submissions to our fellowship program.  Please call Tiki Valentino, Fellowship Coordinator, at 310-825-5235 for more information regarding the application and interviewing process.
