The Ketogenic Diet Program

The UCLA Ketogenic Diet Program was established in 1994 to provide an alternative approach to treating children (primarily between 1 to 8 years old) who have epilepsy that has not responded to standard anticonvulsant medications. The diet is based on the protocol devised and used at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, MD. All children referred to this program are screened to ensure they are appropriate candidates. Qualified candidates are admitted to the hospital to initiate the diet under close medical supervision by the program team, which includes a pediatric nurse coordinator, a pediatric dietician, and a pediatric neurologist. Dietary and medical management continues on an outpatient basis.
