The UCLA Lung Cancer Program is among the national leaders, with the resources, commitment and expertise to set standards in lung cancer prevention, detection, treatment and research. With a large team of experts across a range of specialties, UCLA's program is distinguished by its multidisciplinary approach and the wealth of experience accumulated as a busy center of care and innovation.

UCLA has historically played a leadership role in lung cancer research and continues to do so today. When the National Cancer Institute (NCI) created the Lung Cancer Study Group in 1977, UCLA was one of only seven designated institutions in the nation. Thirty years later, UCLA is again one of only seven institutions in the country designated by the NCI, this time as a Specialized Program of Research Excellence (SPORE) in lung cancer. The NCI has also designated UCLA's Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center one of an elite group of Comprehensive Cancer Centers and U.S. News & World Report has ranked Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center among the nation's top hospitals in each of the years it has published its rankings.

At UCLA, there is a weekly conference where new and established patients with complex thoracic malignancies including lung cancers are presented. From these discussions, our multidisciplinary team makes a treatment recommendation specific for each patient situation.

In the UCLA Medical Plaza, a combined clinic composed of healthcare professionals from thoracic surgery, medical oncology, and radiation oncology provides expert evaluation of patients with thoracic malignancies, including lung cancer, on the same day if indicated.

Research studies involve the treatment of thoracic malignancies, clinical trials in prevention, and trials of promising biologic and targeted therapy in combination with chemotherapy.
