Research Interest

Dr. Hwang is particularly interested in orbital disease and facial aesthetic reconstruction, and investigates the causes of and potential treatments for Graves’ orbital disease. Dr. Hwangs’ research in collaboration with Dr. Raymond Douglas and Dr. Terry Smith has identified a novel autoantibody which may promote the disease. Current investigations include a new clinical test for the presence or severity of disease and potential treatment alternatives specifically targeting the inflamed tissue. In addition to research investigating the causes of Graves’ disease, Dr. Hwang collaborates on several projects investigating functional eyelid and orbital disorders.

Additional Information
Dr. Catherine J. Hwang has an appointment as an Associate Physician Diplomate at the University of California, Los Angeles School of Medicine in the Department of Ophthalmology. She sees patients in her private office, located inside the Institute building. Additionally, she is the head of the division of orbital and ophthalmic plastic surgery at the Greater Los Angeles Veterans Hospital. Dr. Hwangs’ area of expertise is in oculofacial plastic and reconstructive surgery, which encompasses diseases of the eye socket (thyroid eye disease or orbital tumors), eyelids, lacrimal (tear drainage) system, and face including Mohs reconstruction. Dr. Hwangs’ area of expertise also includes cosmetic surgery of the eyelids and face, including blepharoplasty, botulinum toxin, various fillers, and laser skin resurfacing.

Dr. Hwang has published more than 20 articles on topics including cellular immunology, cancer research, thyroid eye disease, facial plastic surgery and cosmetic surgery, and has contributed in two textbooks.
