Michael L. Steinberg, MD, FASTRO, FACR, FACRO is a board-certified specialist in radiation oncology. He is a founding partner of the Santa Monica Cancer Treatment Center and Cancer Care Consultants Medical Associates and is a Senior Vice President of 21" Century Oncology. In addition to his clinical practice in radiation oncology, Dr. Steinberg is also involved in clinical research as the Principle Investigator for the Cancer Disparity Research Program grant from the National Cancer Institute ($3,500,000). Dr. Steinberg recently completed his term on the Board of Directors of radiation oncology's national specialty organization, ASTRO, where he Chaired the Health Policy Council which oversees issues of health policy and healthcare economics for the specialty of radiation oncology.
Dr. Steinberg attended Occidental College graduating Phi Beta Kappa, majoring in Chemistry and Asian Studies. He attended the University of Southern California where he earned AOA honors and his M.D. degree. He completed specialty training in Radiation Oncology at UCLA. Dr. Steinberg has special clinical expertise in brachytherapy, prostate cancer, gynecological cancer, and breast cancer. He has served as President of the California Radiation Oncology Society, as a Councilor to the American College of Radiology and on the Board of Chancellors of the American College of Radiation Oncology. Dr. Steinberg is Chair of the cancer program committee at Santa Monica / UCLA Medical Center and rose to the level of Clinical Professor of Radiation Oncology at the UCLA's Geffen School of Medicine. In addition, Dr. Steinberg continues his association with the RAND Corporation conducting health services research and has published in the areas of quality of care and disparity.
Dr. Steinberg is the ASTRO representative to the American Medical Association's (AMA) CPT Editorial Panel which defines the nomenclature for medical procedures and the American College of Radiation Oncology representative to the AMA's Relative Value Update Committee (RUC) which defines valuation for medical procedures. He has been appointed to the Medicare Evidence and Coverage Advisory Committee (MCAC). He currently serves on Carrier Advisory Committee (CAC) for the California Medicare carrier.
Dr. Steinberg has been instrumental in providing meaningful input into critical health policy and economic issues on behalf of patients and the specialty through his various leadership positions in radiation oncology and his publications in health policy and healthcare economics. In recognition of his contribution and professional leadership in the field of radiation oncology, Dr. Steinberg was elected to the first cohort of Fellows of ASTRO and was also honored as a Fellow of the American College of Radiology and the American College of Radiation Oncology. In recognition of his superior medical skills, Dr. Steinberg was selected by his peers to be included in Best Doctors in America.
