Pediatric Pulmonology services expand

08/13/2012

Pediatric PulmonologyUCLA Pediatric Pulmonology services are expanding to meet the needs of an increasing number of children with severe respiratory problems, making it one of the few pediatric pulmonology programs with the resources to handle a growing volume of patients. The new services build on UCLA's goal of improving patients' lives and their long-term outcomes. Our pediatric pulmonologists provide comprehensive consultation, diagnosis and treatment for conditions including:

  • apnea
  • asthma
  • chronic lung disease
  • cystic fibrosis
  • pneumonia
  • recurrent cough
  • valley fever
  • wheezing

We now offer home treatments for children who need ventilators or are dependent on oxygen, tracheostomy tubes or other breathing devices. Our specialists offer a monthly pulmonary clinic for children with chronic lung disease.

Full range of resources

Our multidisciplinary team includes pediatric pulmonologists and other pediatric specialists. Social workers, nurses, dietitians, lactation consultants and respiratory therapists offer support, training and education to patients and their families.

A growing problem

UCLA is bolstering its pediatric pulmonary services in response to an increased population of children with asthma, apnea and other respiratory problems. As treatments and technology advance, more premature infants are surviving, but often have chronic lung problems. With pediatric pulmonologists in short supply nationwide, UCLA is one of only a few hospitals in Southern California that has the resources to meet this challenge.

Respiratory problems on the rise

"Respiratory issues are among the most prevalent problems we see in children," says Sande Okelo, M.D., Ph.D., director of UCLA's pediatric asthma program. "In response, UCLA is expanding our program to treat all types of pediatric pulmonary conditions."

UCLA Pediatric Pulmonology combines a multidisciplinary approach, research support and state-of-the-art facilities.
