As the baby-boom generation ages — more than 70 million Americans will be 65 or older by 2030 — it is likely that many of those in their 80s will spend some time during their remaining years in a skilled-nursing facility. Placement in a skilled-nursing facility often occurs following an acute illness, when the patient is no longer ill enough to remain in the hospital but is still not able to care for himself or herself in a home setting. Due to a variety of factors, “people are being discharged from acute care quicker and sicker,” says UCLA geriatrician
