The Neurorehabilitation inpatient and outpatient services are designed around an interdisciplinary team approach to patient care, comprising the physician's evaluation in concert, when appropriate, with physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech rehabilitation, nursing, neuropsychology, and social work assessment. The team assesses functional problems and disabilities related to mobility, self care, and cognition. Our physicians have a special interest in trying to improve walking and functional use of the hand where feasible, sometimes through participation in research studies. A treatment plan consistent with realistic goals is recommended for the patient and family.
Typical referrals include patients suffering from stroke, head trauma, spinal cord injury, multiple sclerosis, polyneuropathy, headache, neck and back pain, gait disorders, and deconditioning that accompanies many general medical illnesses. Selected patients have the opportunity to participate in trials of new rehabilitative techniques.
The inpatient 11-bed Neurologic Rehabilitation and Research Unit is located on the first floor of the Semel Institute at 760 Westwood Plaza, Suite 17-443. Outpatient services are located in 300 UCLA Medical Plaza.
