Special Services at The BirthPlace
As one of Southern Californias most complete and highly regarded maternity centers, The BirthPlace offers these specialized services:
High-Risk Pregnancy Care. Our Perinatal Center provides ongoing care for patients considered at high risk for complications during their pregnancies. The center is run by a world-renown perinatalogist (doctor who specializes in caring for high-risk pregnancies).
If you experience premature labor or other complications, you may be admitted to our Antepartum Unit for specialized nursing care, including intensive monitoring and intravenous drug therapy. The unit also provides care to patients expecting multiple babies. Our staff perinatalogist can consult with your physician about any high-risk pregnancy issues.
Non-Stress Testing Lab. When ordered by your physician, this unit performs specialized monitoring to check on the health status of you and your baby during your pregnancy.
24-hour Obstetrical Anesthesia. Our dedicated, in-house anesthesiologists cover The BirthPlace on a 24-hour basis to ensure you have access to anesthesia during labor or should an emergency C-section become necessary. These highly skilled professionals provide continuous epidural anesthesia, which provides pain relief while you remain awake. It has been proven safe for both you and your baby. Our anesthesiologists will answer your questions and address your concerns about pain management.
Well-Baby Nursery. Our Well-Baby Nursery, staffed 24 hours by nurses who specialize in newborn and postpartum care, is where your baby will be bathed and undergo nursing assessments, screenings, hearing tests, procedures such as circumcision, pediatrician exams, consultations and observation. The unit also provides respite by taking care of your newborn when you need time for yourselves. Besides the latest technology, our Nursery features large windows to enable family members and friends to view your new arrival.
Neonatal Intensive Care. The BirthPlace also provides special care for special babies in our Neonatal Intensive-Care Unit, a Level-II facility. You may not need its services, but you'll rest assured knowing this highly specialized unit is nearby.

Maternity Waiting Room

Dedicated Pediatrics Unit. Santa Monica-UCLA Medical Center and Orthopaedic Hospital also features the citys only Emergency Department Approved for Pediatrics (EDAP) and dedicated Pediatrics Unit to ensure that infants, young children and adolescents receive age-friendly care when a hospital stay is required. Physicians, nurses and other health professionals who specialize in pediatric care staff the unit.
Personalized Assistance. Our BirthPlace Manager and Education Coordinator are both mothers and instructors with extensive experience in all aspects of maternity care. They will answer your questions, help you select the birthing options best suited to your needs and provide other resources and referrals. To reach our BirthPlace Office, call (310) 319-4947.
Alternative Birthing Options. We also support alternative birthing styles by striving to meet the special needs of adoptions, surrogacy and samegender parenting. For private consultations and tours, call our BirthPlace Office.
Prenatal, Postpartum Educational Classes. The BirthPlace features a wide range of classes, including natural childbirth instruction and a parenting education series, to help you prepare for your childs arrival and the responsibilities of parenthood. All of our instructors are certified and have extensive experience in childbirth and parenting education. See the Educational Program insert for a detailed description of our classes. Additionally, The Newborn Channel available in your hospital room broadcasts a full spectrum of educational programming for parents.
Breast-Feeding Support. Our caring staff, lactation educators and certified consultants will help ease your transition fromhospital to home by answering your questions about breast-feeding and personally working with you. Your nurse can arrange for these visits, which are available every day.
Pregnancy and Recovery Exercise Classes. The BirthPlace can provide referrals to pregnancy and recovery exercise classes at convenient locations in the community.
Additional Amenities and Services
Complimentary Birth Certificate. A souvenir birth certificate containing key information about your babys arrival will be given to you while you are in the hospital or mailed to you shortly thereafter as a memento of your childs birth. Please note that this certificate is NOT the legal document that comes from the County Hall of Records.
Upgraded Room Options. The BirthPlace offers several options for patients seeking upgraded accommodations and services during their stays. We can create a large VIP suite that includes an elegant roomfor you, your partner and baby, as well as rooms for a nanny or other family members. We also offer patients the option of upgrading to our larger Deluxe Rooms, which include additional amenities. Contact our BirthPlace Office for details and pricing information.
Baby Portraits. During your postpartum stay, you will be visited by a representative from a company approved by our hospital to perform baby portraits. The company uses special equipment and lights that won't harm your baby's eyes. For information about this service, please contact our BirthPlace Office.
Home Care, Doula Service. You can arrange for follow-up home visits by maternity nurses, as well as the personal support of a labor or postpartum doula (mother's assistant). Call our BirthPlace Office for more information or referrals to these professionals.
