Jury Duty

If you receive a summons for jury duty in the County of Los Angeles, follow these steps:

  1. Find a Monday in your schedule when you can potentially take the day off to go into the courthouse. You can work with the chiefs to figure out this day (usually outpatient, elective, vacation, etc.).
  2. Contact Med Ed office (Cherie Lewis) with:
    • Your juror ID number
    • Name and address of Courthouse
    • Original date
    • New date
  3. We will make this transfer request and also ask that you be assigned to Group 98 or 99, Special Group. This is the last group to be called when they are seeking jurors.
  4. You will receive a new jury summons. When you do so, call in the day before as instructed. You will likely have to do this only for one day. FYI, based on UCLA Medical Center and School of Medicine policy, house staff are limited to ten paid days of leave for jury duty.
Please note: You must follow all the directions in the jury summons letter you receive, regardless of any letter the Pediatrics Medical Education Office writes on your behalf. Be sure to keep a copy of the letter for your records. Please be aware that the request will not necessarily result in a postponement, deferment, or excuse. After the documents are mailed, the Jury Commission may send you a request for more information, express that you are relieved from jury duty, or tell you that you must still show up for jury duty. Please be sure to follow any and all instructions you receive from the Jury Commission (including your initial summons).
