Santa Monica-UCLA Medical Center Virtual Tour

About Us

Santa Monica UCLA Medical Center and Orthopaedic HospitalSanta Monica-UCLA Medical Center and Orthopaedic Hospital is an acute-care medical center that has served the healthcare needs of West Los Angeles and Santa Monica since 1926. One of the two hospital campuses of UCLA Health System, Santa Monica-UCLA Medical Center and Orthopaedic Hospital features outstanding clinical programs that include its women's and children's services, emergency services and family medicine programs. Santa Monica-UCLA Medical Center and Orthopaedic Hospital also is the inpatient home of the U.S.News & World Report No. 1-ranked UCLA Geriatrics Program, and home to the internationally known Rape Treatment Center and its adjunct facility, Stuart House, for sexually abused children.

The hospital is currently undergoing a major rebuilding project, replacing most of the existing facility with a new, state-of-the-art medical center offering optimal inpatient facilities, and the newly opened 16,000-square-foot Nethercutt Emergency Center.  Nethercutt Emergency CenterThe new ER, which features the latest technological equipment, is designed to better serve the 30,000 patients who annually seek emergency treatment. A key feature of the ER is an onsite, 64-slice CT Scanner that enables physicians to more rapidly diagnose ailments such as chest pain, stroke and breathing disorders. The new ER serves as Santa Monica's only "Emergency Department Approved for Pediatrics" and is designated as a STEMI receiving center for heart-attack patients.

Additional services will open in early 2008, including a 26-bed oncology unit, a new birthing center and a new, 16-bassinet neonatal intensive care unit. A remodeled postpartum unit and well-baby nursery will open concurrently in the existing Merle Norman Pavilion.

The name of the hospital reflects a unique alliance between UCLA Health System and Orthopaedic Hospital in downtown Los Angeles that expands and enhances the clinical, teaching and research capabilities of both institutions. For more than 90 years, Orthopaedic Hospital has been a recognized leader in research, teaching and patient care in orthopaedic medicine, resulting in an improved quality of life for children and adults with crippling diseases. The inpatient services of Orthopaedic Hospital have been relocated to Santa Monica, while its outpatient services remain at the downtown facility.

About the new Santa Monica-UCLA Medical Center and Orthopaedic Hospital
The replacement hospital was designed by prominent New York architect Robert A.M. Stern, who is dean of the Yale School of Architecture, in conjunction with CO Architects (formerly Anshen + Allen Los Angeles). The unique design features a Northern Italian architectural style similar to original buildings on the UCLA campus. More than 25 percent of the new medical campus will be devoted to green and open spaces. The replacement hospital will connect to the existing Merle Norman Pavilion and feature an inviting, user-friendly design compatible with the hospital's neighborhood setting. Its key features will include six new, state-of-the-art operating rooms, the birthing center and new NICU, a critical care unit with state-of-the-art medical equipment and 360-degree access to patients, and patient rooms featuring family space and comfortable sleep chairs for rooming-in.
