About Santa Monica-UCLA Medical Center and Orthopaedic Hospital
Santa Monica-UCLA Medical Center and Orthopaedic Hospital is a 315-bed, evolving academic medical center with a longstanding tradition of community care. One of the two hospital campuses of UCLA Health System, the medical center features many outstanding clinical services, including its 24-hour Nethercutt Emergency Center, BirthPlace maternity center and its family medicine programs. Santa Monica-UCLA & OH also is the inpatient home of the UCLA Geriatrics Program, ranked #2 in the United States, as well as UCLA's highly regarded orthopaedic, spine and general medicine programs.
The hospital is nearing completion on a major rebuilding project to replace most of the existing facility with a new, state-of-the-art medical center offering optimal inpatient facilities, as well as the 16,000-square-foot Nethercutt Emergency Center. The ER, which opened in 2007, features the latest technology and is designed to better serve the almost 40,000 patients who annually seek emergency treatment. A key feature of the ER is an onsite, 64-slice CT Scanner that enables physicians to more rapidly diagnose ailments such as chest pain, stroke and breathing disorders. The ER serves as Santa Monica's only "Emergency Department Approved for Pediatrics" and is designated as a STEMI receiving center for heart-attack patients. It also features fastER, a fast-track service for minor injuries and illnesses. A state-of-the-art medical laboratory, linked to the ER via a pneumatic tube system, opened simultaneously with the Nethercutt facility.
Additional services that have already opened include a 26-bed oncology unit, new birthing center with a new, 16-bassinet neonatal intensive care unit and a new post-anesthesia care unit. A remodeled postpartum unit and well-baby nursery opened concurrently in the medical center's existing Merle Norman Pavilion.
As part of its commitment to the health and well-being of children, Santa Monica-UCLA & OH features Santa Monica's only inpatient pediatrics unit, as well as the city's only pediatric ICU.
The name of the hospital reflects a unique alliance between UCLA Health System and Orthopaedic Hospital in downtown Los Angeles that expands and enhances the clinical, teaching and research capabilities of both institutions. For more than 90 years, Orthopaedic Hospital has been a recognized leader in research, teaching and patient care in orthopaedic medicine, resulting in an improved quality of life for children and adults with crippling diseases. The inpatient services of Orthopaedic Hospital have been relocated to Santa Monica, while it continues to offer outpatient services at its downtown facility. The Luskin Children's Clinic, now open in Santa Monica, provides outpatient consultations for a wide range of pediatric orthopaedic conditions, including scoliosis and spinal deformities, spina bifida, cerebral palsy, clubfoot, muscular dystrophy, hemophilia, musculoskeletal tumors and fractures. The clinic will relocate to the new hospital after it opens next year.
About the new Santa Monica-UCLA Medical Center and Orthopaedic Hospital
Scheduled for completion in mid-2011, the replacement hospital was designed by prominent New York architect Robert A.M. Stern, who is dean of the Yale School of Architecture, in conjunction with CO Architects (formerly Anshen + Allen Los Angeles). The unique design features a Northern Italian architectural style similar to original buildings on the UCLA campus. More than 25 percent of the new medical campus will be devoted to green and open spaces.
The replacement hospital will connect to the existing Merle Norman Pavilion and feature an inviting, user-friendly design compatible with the hospital's neighborhood setting. Some of its key features will include six new, state-of-the-art operating rooms, a critical care unit with state-of-the-art medical equipment and 360-degree access to patients, an expanded inpatient pediatrics unit, all-digital imaging technology, leading-edge medical equipment and communications technology and patient rooms featuring abundant natural light, family space and comfortable sleep chairs for rooming-in.
