COURSES: Selective: MSI & MSII | Elective: MSIII & MSIV | Chiefs

David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA students at all levels of their medical education can be involved in the homeless clinics. By participating, students receive course credit towards their medical degree and gain firsthand experience in community-based clinical care.

Please note: Both the Selective & Elective Courses are longitudinal experiences.

Selective: MSI & MSII

Period of Participation: October 2012 - June 2013

  • Orientation Session
  • 6 clinics
  • Attendance to at least 4 lunchtime lectures
  • Attendance at the mid-year (Jan) and end-of-year (May) reflection sessions or a 1-2 page reflective paper on an experience at a clinic (email to Sun Lim)

All requirements must be completed by June 1, 2013. Fulfills requirement for one Selective done in either the first or second year.

Elective: MSIII & MSIV

(One week of 200-level credit)

Period of Participation
3rd Year Students: July 2012 - June 2013
4th Year Students: July 2012 - May 2013

  • Orientation Session
  • 7 clinics
  • 1 educational activity from the list below:
    • Teach MS1/2 on-site: H&P, assessment and plan, writing notes (extra clinic)
    • On-site presentation/lecture to MS1/MS2s
      • Lecture ideas: skin infections, schizophrenia, intimate partner violence, asthma, hypertension, diabetes, tuberculosis
    • Facilitate a Smoking Cessation session for residents at Samoshel or the Winter Shelters
    • Provide an educational lecture to the residents at Samoshel or the Winter Shelters
    • Other activity approved by the Course Chair
  • Attendance at the mid-year (Jan) and end-of-year (May) reflection sessions or a 1-2 page reflective paper on an experience at a clinic (email to Sun Lim)

MSIII: All requirements must be completed by June 1, 2013.
MSIV: All requirements must be completed by May 1, 2013. (Can fulfill Primary Care College requirement)

Chiefs

(One week of 100-level credit and one week of 200-level credit)
(Total: two weeks of credit)

Period of Participation: April 2012 - May 2013

  • Orientation Session
  • 7 clinics
  • 1 educational activity as described above under MSIII/IV requirements
  • Several positions available:
    1. Director of Operations Chief
      • Organizes and runs monthly Chief meetings; liaison between the SRHC, the DGSOM administration, MSC, and SRHC Program Director
      • Recruits and schedules students, residents and attendings for all SRHC clinics
      • Updates and improves SRHC website and calendar
    2. Integrated Logistics & Supplies Chief
      • Manages funding and financial support, writes grants' collaboration with other organizations; coordinates and improves clinics and clinic projects
      • Responsible for ordering, monitoring, and stocking of supplies and medications; assists in obtaining grants/funding and donations
    3. Education Administrator Chief
      • Arranges, coordinates, and schedules the volunteer orientation, lunchtime lecture series, and teaching activities at the clinics; organizes patient information and educational handouts
    4. Community Clinics Chief
      • Manages the clinics at the Santa Monica Shelter on Saturday mornings.
      • Manages the Winter Shelter clinics on Monday and Thursday evenings, including logistics, supplies, and development
    5. Community Psych Chief
      • Manages the psychiatry services at each clinic; recruits and schedules students and attendings; monitors longitudinal followup of clients

All requirements must be completed by May 1, 2013.
