Young patients, plus celebrity designer, create meaningful cards

Mattel Children's Hospital UCLA announced the arrival of the 2009 holiday card collection created by pediatric patients at a kick-off event on Sept. 15.

Generations of Dreams Barbie Holiday Card by Robert BestIn addition to cards created by children, a collector's Barbie Card, designed by Robert Best, principal Barbie designer at Mattel, Inc., Season 3 contestant on Project Runway and a hospital volunteer, will also be offered this year.

Actress Dakota Fanning is also supporting the program and videotaped a message to promote the holiday card collection, (click to watch video).

This year's collection includes seven designs.  All cards are customized by either choosing a pre-written message or creating their own.  The cards cost $20 for a set of 12.  They are 5X7 inches and include white envelopes.  Orders placed before Sept. 30 will receive a 25-percent discount.

Proceeds from the holiday cards will directly benefit the internationally renowned Child Life/Child Development Program at Mattel Children's Hospital UCLA, whose specialists work with young patients at bedside to assist creative expression and ease fear and anxiety during lengthy hospitalizations.  Established in 1968, the program was one of the first of its kind in the country and continues to be a model for other medical centers.
