  • Identify patient’s language.  If unknown, please use the language card.
  • Schedule interpreters by completing the interpreter request form online, by email or by fax to Ext. 47924, at least 24 to 48 hrs. in advance.  Click here for the Interpreter Request Form.
  • For Deaf and Hard of Hearing patients schedule in advance by calling Interpreter Services at (310) 267-8001 or by using the Interpreter Request Form.
  • For unforeseen medical interpreter needs during office hours, contact us at Ext. 78001.
  • Off hours and holidays, contact the page operator at (310) 825-6301.
  • Please contact our office once the provider is ready to see the patient.

Our department will arrange an interpreter either face to face, over the telephone (for spoken languages) or via video and will keep you updated. Priority is given to emergency situations, then to scheduled appointments, and same day requests.

UCLA Medical Center, Santa Monica

Monday to Friday 7:00 am – 3:30 pm, page the interpreter directly at Ext. 93144.  For all other hours, call the SMUCLAOH operator at Ext. 94500.

Information you will need when calling Interpreter Services:

  • Name of the person who is calling
  • Extension/telephone # of the location where the patient will be seen
  • Last & first name of the patient
  • Specific clinic name where the patient will be seen (ex. family health, medical specialty suites, neurology, etc.)
  • Location of the appointment (ex. 100, 200, 300 medical plazas ) & room #
  • Patient ID #
  • Name of the doctor and/or nurse who will be seeing the patient
  • Estimated duration of appointment
  • Time of the appointment

Patient’s Rights

Patients have the right to:

  • Request a medical interpreter anytime, even if they speak limited English (this should not be decided by hospital staff).
  • Use or refuse the UCLA medical interpreter, face to face or over the phone (care providers may elect to have an interpreter present to ensure accurate interpretation).
  • Who is a Limited English Proficient Individual?

    An LEP individual is a person who is unable to speak, read, write or understand the English language at a level that permits him or her to interact effectively with care providers.

    Helping patients exercise their rights ensures:

    • effective communication
    • understanding of medical information
    • compliance with follow-up treatment
    • cooperation
    • satisfaction

    REMEMBER, THE USE OF PROFESSIONAL MEDICAL INTERPRETERS PRESERVES PATIENT CONFIDENTIALITY, ACCURACY AND A PATIENT'S RIGHT TO INFORMED CONSENT AND ENSURES CULTURALLY COMPETENT CARE.

    American Sign Language

    Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA):

    • Title II and Title III of the Americans with Disabilities Act covers places of public accommodation and public entities, regardless of whether that entity receives federal financial assistance.
    • A public accommodation shall furnish appropriate auxiliary aids and services where necessary to ensure effective communication with individuals with disabilities.

    Aids and services include:

    • Qualified interpreters
    • Pen and paper
    • Telephonic device for the deaf
    • Video

    How to communicate with deaf patients:

    • If clinics need to contact deaf patients, they may do so by dialing 711 (Relay Service).
    • Patients can contact clinics directly for appointments via TDD, e-mails and another person.

    Deaf & Hard Of Hearing Patients:

    • Sign language and oral interpreters, TDDs, and other services are available free of charge, to ensure effective communication between staff, patients and patients’ families.
    • UCLA currently has an American Sign Language (ASL) Medical Interpreter on their staff and contracts for other communication support services as needed.

    Served by UCLA staff of in-house medical interpreters. Schedule medical interpreters by fax or calling our phone extension, please contact us at least 24 to 48hrs in advance for encounters such as:

    • physician or therapist scheduled appointments
    • scheduled tests
    • to get consents for scheduled procedures
    • inpatient consults
    • physician rounds
    • family meetings

     
    For unforeseen medical interpreter needs during office hours please contact us.  For off hours, contact the page operator at your facility.  Medical interpreters will be assigned as needed, after confirmation that the patient has arrived and that the provider is ready to see him/her.
