Sleep Medicine

Sleep Laboratory

The Sleep Laboratory is a division of UCLA Peninsula Pulmonary.  Khalid Eltawil, MD, M. Anthony Rasic, MD, and Roman Culjat, MD, are sleep specialists who see patients in our sleep lab.

Our sleep laboratory has also received accreditation by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM). Accreditation from AASM is the gold standard by which the medical community and the public evaluate sleep medicine. As an accredited laboratory, we have demonstrated that our lab is committed to providing the highest level of patient care.

Sleep disturbances affect a large percentage of our population and can have debilitating health consequences such as heart problems, stroke, and depression. Many people are symptomatic, but are under diagnosed and inadequately treated due in part to the limited availability of sleep specialists. This need prompted the opening of our Sleep Center.

Sleep disorders service provides state-of-the-art evaluation and treatment of patients with suspected or documented sleep disorders and medical conditions related to sleep disturbance.

At the lab, our goal is to raise community awareness of healthy sleeping habits and to provide prompt accessibility for the diagnosis and treatment of ALL sleep disturbances. We are dedicated to helping our patients accomplish the goal of an uninterrupted night's sleep and a healthier lifestyle.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a Sleep Disorders Evaluation include?
A sleep evaluation includes a detailed interview and medical assessment by a Board Certified Sleep Specialist to evaluate your symptoms and diagnose your sleep disorder. A personalized treatment plan is then prepared and discussed with each patient.

Will I need an overnight study to diagnose my disorder?
While many sleep disorders require the data collected during a sleep study to diagnose and aid in the development of a treatment plan, some disorders do not. If an overnight study is necessary, it will be performed at the Sleep Laboratory on a date that is convenient for you. It usually begins between 8:00pm and ends by 5:30 am.

Who performs the sleep test?
The test is performed with personal attention by a Sleep Technologist in private, hotel-like rooms which are furnished with pillow-top mattresses, upgraded linens, a comfortable chair and a flat-panel TV. There is a shower available for your use in the morning. All efforts are made to insure your privacy, comfort and safety.

Is a sleep study painful or invasive?
No, a sleep study is non-invasive and completely painless. Sensors are applied with paste or tape to the body's surface to monitor sleep patterns as well as heart, lung and brain functions.
