Respiratory Disorders

Pulmonary medicine is a subspecialty of internal medicine that focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the respiratory tract. A pulmonologist has expertise in the evaluation of patients with breathlessness, cough, wheezing, and chest tightness, as well as abnormalities of the chest x-ray, chest CT scan and other chest imaging studies.

We provide you with the most advanced techniques in pulmonary and sleep medicine.

Critical Care

At UCLA Peninsula Pulmonary our physicians care for some of the most complicated and critically ill patients in the South Bay area, both in the hospital and in the outpatient office.

Sleep Medicine

Sleep disturbances affect a large percentage of our population and can have debilitating health consequences such as heart problems, stroke, and depression. Many people are symptomatic, but are under diagnosed and inadequately treated due in part to the limited availability of sleep specialists. This need prompted the opening of our Sleep Laboratory.

The Sleep Disorders service provides state-of-the-art evaluation and treatment of patients with suspected or documented sleep disorders and medical conditions related to sleep disturbance.

Allergy Testing

We have incorporated allergy testing into our practice in order to determine if symptoms such as cough, runny nose, nasal congestion and post nasal drip are due to allergies. Allergy testing is also recommended if a patient has a history of asthma and has never been allergy screened. Often, allergens such as pollen, animals, dust and mold can be a significant asthma trigger.

Allergy tests provide specific information about what you are and are not allergic to. Once we have identified the specific allergen(s) causing your symptoms, we can develop a treatment plan aimed at controlling or eliminating your allergy symptoms. When your allergy symptoms become controlled, you should see a considerable improvement in the quality of your life. You may notice improved sleep quality because of less congestion, days without constant sneezing and blowing your nose and improved ability to exercise.

Pulmonary Function Laboratory

Our pulmonary function laboratory provides a full range of lung diagnostic services which include:

  • Spirometry Pre and Post Bronchodilator
  • Maximal Voluntary Ventilation
  • Lung Volumes
  • Diffusion Capacity
  • Full Body Plethysmography
  • Arterial Blood Gas Analysis and Oxygen Saturations
  • Methacholine Challenge

When combined with a physician's examination and appropriate x-ray testing, this data gives your doctor very precise information regarding the detailed analysis of your lung function. The testing is done right on the premises and test results are interpreted by a Board-Certified Pulmonary Physician.

Pulmonary Function Tests are indicated for the following reasons:

  1. Screening for obstructive or restrictive lung diseases
  2. Evaluating the patient prior to surgery. This especially applies to patients who:
  3. Are older than 60 years old
Are known to have lung disease
    Are morbidly obese
Have a history of smoking, coughing, or wheezing
Will be under anesthesia for a prolonged period of time
Are undergoing an abdominal or chest operation
  4. Documenting the progression of lung disease.
  5. Documenting the effectiveness of therapeutic interventions

Cough Center

The Peninsula Pulmonary Cough Center was developed to better understand, diagnose and treat patients with cough syndromes. The numbers of people developing cough has increased dramatically in recent years. At the same time, our understanding of the many causes of cough along with the evaluation and treatment has improved. To be able to appropriately diagnose and treat cough requires a detailed and focused approach. Our Cough Center is unique in that we focus our efforts on the evaluation and treatment of disease entities presenting as cough.

Cough is divided into 3 categories by duration of cough:

  • Acute (less than 3 weeks)
  • Subacute (3 - 8 weeks)
  • Chronic (more than 8 weeks)

Several published studies have shown that a focused, organized and algorithmic evaluation of cough can reveal a diagnosis of cause in nearly 100% of cases. PPMA's Cough Center can provide a more efficient and cost effective approach, as many of the diagnostic tools which are helpful in cough evaluation are available in our office. Our goal is to establish an accurate diagnosis and to institute treatment as quickly as possible.

The Cough Center provides the following comprehensive array of services:

  • A personalized and comprehensive evaluation process including a complete medical history and medical exam.
  • Review of all previous medical evaluations and tests.
  • Diagnostic testing including breathing tests, labs, O2 monitoring, blood gas analysis, methacholine challenge, allergy testing, X-Ray, rhinoscopy, and bronchoscopy.
  • Other tests that we schedule and coordinate include CAT scanning and gastroesophageal acid monitoring.
  • Continuity of care through communication with other specialists and follow up of test results with patients.
  • Patient care conferences to follow progress and evaluation of the treatment plan.

X-ray / CT / Pet Scan Services

In order to expedite the diagnosis and treatment of your medical condition, we are able to do on site X-rays with immediate interpretation. Our practice also has access to a CT Scan and PET Scan facility which is in the same complex as our pulmonary and sleep medicine practices.
