UCLA Pediatric Surgery

Global Health

Dr. Daniel DeUgarte (right), UCLA Pediatric Surgery is involved in global health activities with The UCLA Program in Global Health and Partners for Pediatric Progress.

The UCLA Division of Pediatric Surgery has been involved in global health activities, partnering closely with the The UCLA Program in Global Health and Partners for Pediatric Progress.

An alliance between UCLA and Eduardo Mondlane School of Medicine in the southeastern African country of Mozambique, has allowed our division to participate in the training of a local pediatric surgeon, Dr. Atanasio Taela.  There is an extreme shortage of trained physicians in Mozambique, and Dr. Taela is the only local general surgeon dedicated to pediatric surgery in a country with over 10 million children. Our hope is that by helping to train Dr. Taela, the Chief of Pediatric Surgery at the major training hospital in the country, that we will provide a meaningful and sustainable impact on pediatric surgical care in Mozambique.

The Division of Pediatric Surgery has hosted clinical and research fellows from all over the world including Spain, Hong Kong, China, and Taiwan.

UCLA Division of Pediatric Surgery in OR.Our faculty member, Dr. Daniel DeUgarte, has also traveled to Peru, China, and Mozambique to help establish clinical elective experiences in these settings for senior UCLA medical students interested in pursuing global health opportunities. These experiences can promote humanism and compassion in the developing physician and nurture the careers of the next generation of health care leaders.
