Pediatric Cardiothoracic Surgery

The Mattel Children's Hospital UCLA continues to be at the forefront of pediatric heart surgery in Southern California and nation wide. We have a rapidly growing volume of congenital heart surgeries with over 350 operations annually. We specialize in the most complex of surgeries in the youngest of patients, including the Norwood procedure, Arterial Switch Operation and the Ross procedure.

We have three dedicated surgeons Drs. Brian Reemtsen, Hillel Laks and Reshma Biniwale. In addition the children are operated in an environment totally dedicated to small patients and their specific needs with a team trained specifically to deal with these complex conditions. The preoperative and postoperative care is managed by a multidisciplinary team headed by the surgeons, cardiologist and intensive care specialist. Children and their parents will have daily contact with the entire team and be updated on the child's progress.
In addition the surgical team also performs the adult congenital heart surgery. This provides continuity of care for teenagers transitioning to adulthood and having stable care for their specific condition. Our team performs heart transplantation in patients with congenital heart disease as well as cardiomyopathy and continues to be one of the world leaders in this specialty.

The surgical team works closely with interventional cardiology team performing "hybrid" procedures on select patients to provide a less invasive treatment for congenital heart disease. We are continually striving to be at the cutting edge of technology to optimize patient care and safety.
