UCLA Pediatric Critical Care

Clinical Medicine Program

The clinical program provides a superb experience in caring for critically ill children.

Fellows care for all children admitted to the 18 bed Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) and the 6 bed Pediatric Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit (PCTICU). The PICU provides all critical care support for our busy programs in medicine, neurosurgery, general surgery, transplantation, craniofacial reconstruction, otolaryngology and trauma, among others. In the PCTICU, the fellows provide care to patients with the full spectrum of cardiac disease including a large cardiomyopathy and heart failure population, who often require mechanical assistance with extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) and ventricular assist devices (VAD).

In addition to clinical time in both intensive care units, trainees rotate with the anesthesia service spending time in the main operating rooms, cardiac operating rooms and cardiac catheterization laboratory.

There are also opportunities to rotate through the adult intensive care units, if interested, given our unique location within a large adult facility.

Trainees can also be members of the Neonatal & Pediatric Transport team providing high level transport services for neonates and children throughout the Southern California area and beyond. The team provides ground, helicopter and fixed wing transport for critically ill children including ECMO transport capabilities.
