The CDI, established through initial philanthropic funding to Mattel Children's Hospital UCLA and the Department of Pediatrics at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, encourages multidisciplinary child health research and research training at UCLA across the spectrum of basic, translational, clinical, and health services research.

The Department of Pediatrics at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA is the recipient of the National Institutes of Health, Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, Child Health Research Career Development Award (CHRCDA) Program (K12). The UCLA CHRCDA is committed to training Pediatric subspecialty physician-scientists with an emphasis on basic and translational research towards understanding pediatric diseases.
