UCLA Pediatric Hematology Oncology

Pediatric Cancer Predisposition Clinic

The Pediatric Cancer Predisposition Clinic at Mattel Children's Hospital UCLA is one of a few centers in the nation that uses the latest advances in pediatric oncology and genetics to provide care and counseling to children and families who may have a genetic predisposition to cancer.

Our focus is on children who have:

  • A strong family history of cancer
  • Certain rare pediatric cancers that are associated with pediatric cancer predisposition such as adrenocortical carcinoma, malignant rhabdoid tumor, or cancers that are usually adult-onset such as colorectal carcinoma or basal cell carcinoma
  • Physical signs (such as  hemihyperplasia and macrocephaly) that suggest a potential genetic syndrome associated with a predisposition to cancer
  • Any of about 50 rare genetic syndromes that are associated with pediatric cancer predisposition such as Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome, neurofibromatosis and Li-Fraumeni syndrome

Our multi-disciplinary team of geneticists, pediatric oncologists, genetic counselors and social workers provides children and families with state-of-the-art genetic testing, the most effective and up-to-date cancer screening methods, personalized care and comprehensive psychosocial support.

All patients will be seen by our genetic counselors and geneticists who will perform an in-depth family history that includes the birth, developmental and medical histories of the child and any siblings. If there is a strong family history of cancer, the child's parents and other family members may be referred to our adult clinic for screening. Our geneticists also perform a thorough dysmorphology exam to determine if the child has any malformations or other physical findings that could be associated with a genetic syndrome. Our oncologists will review any known increased risks of cancer and recommend personalized cancer screenings for early-detection of cancer, including laboratory tests, state-of-the-art imaging studies and other subspecialist evaluations.
