Pediatrics Division Welcomes New Faculty Physicians

The Department of Ophthalmology at the UCLA Stein Eye Institute welcomes it's newest staff memembers in the Pediatric Ophthalmology Divsion, Dr. Soh Youn Sun and Dr. Simon Fung. Read all bout their medical experience and clinical interests below.

Soh Youn Suh, MD 

Dr. Suh is a Health Sciences Clinical Instructor of Ophthalmology at the Stein Eye Institute, David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Dr. Suh specializes in pediatric ophthalmology and adult strabismus.

Dr. Suh completed her medical school training at the Ewha Womans University, South Korea in 2006, followed by subsequent ophthalmology residency training at Ewha Womans University Medical Center. After finishing residency in 2011, Dr. Suh had a fellowship training in pediatric ophthalmology and neuro-ophthalmology at Seoul National University hospital, South Korea. In 2013, Dr. Suh undertook an additional fellowship in pediatric ophthalmology and adult strabismus at the Stein Eye Institute at UCLA and in 2014, Dr. Suh subsequently joined the ocular motility laboratory as a postdoctoral research fellow to work with Dr. Joseph L. Demer at the Stein Eye Institute at UCLA. In 2018, Dr. Suh joined the faculty of the Stein Eye Institute at UCLA.

Dr. Suh’s research interests include evaluating extraocular muscle volume/ contractility and pulley positions in several types of strabismus by analyzing high resolution orbital magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) images. Currently, the primary focus of her research is to evaluate strain on the optic nerve head and globe displacement during horizontal ductions in patients and normal controls using MRI and optical coherence tomography (OCT). Dr. Suh has published multiple articles in world’s leading academic journals.

Simon Fung, MD

Dr. Fung is an Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at the Stein Eye Institute, David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). He is a Pediatric Ophthalmology and Cornea specialist. He specializes in the evaluation and management of childhood cornea and anterior eye disorders, including congenital corneal opacity, allergic and inflammatory eye disease, pediatric cataract and glaucoma, and other rare childhood eye diseases.

Dr. Fung completed his medical training at the University of Oxford, England in 2006, followed by ophthalmology residency at the world-renowned Moorfields Eye Hospital in London, England, where he was appointed the 2013/14 Chief Resident. After finishing his residency in 2015, Dr Fung undertook a fellowship in adult cornea and external disease at Moorfields Eye Hospital, followed by a second fellowship in pediatric cornea and anterior segment at The Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto, Canada. In 2018, Dr. Fung joined the faculty of the Stein Eye Institute at UCLA.

Dr. Fung is a medical educator, regularly teaching UCLA medical students, ophthalmology residents and clinical fellows, and he currently serves on the Medical Student Education Committee at the Department of Ophthalmology, UCLA. Dr. Fung is also a clinical researcher, who has been invited to multiple national and international conferences to speak about his work, and is the lead author of multiple articles published in high-impact medical journals.

In addition to his clinical and academic responsibilities, Dr. Fung serves on the committee of the European Society of Ophthalmology Young Ophthalmologists (SOE YO), and is the current Editor of the SOE YO Newsletter. He has also been appointed to the American Academy of Ophthalmology YO International subcommittee recently, and will be starting his term of service from 2019. Dr. Fung is fluent in English and Cantonese, and is conversational in Mandarin.
