Tearing is the eyes response to irritation. Tears keep the exposed surface of the eye moist and wash away dust and other foreign material. The eyes normally create excessive tears (epiphora) in response to strong emotions, but excessive tearing can also result from disorders of the external surface of the eye, problems with the tear drainage system, or flaccid (floppy) lower eyelids.
