Training Programs

The Chase Child Life Program offers a variety of training programs for students at every level of university experience. Each student program is designed to meet the individual learning needs of the student, while maintaining high educational standards and providing a foundation for students to learn about the psychosocial needs of children in healthcare.

At this time, the Chase Child Life Program at Mattel Children’s Hospital UCLA only accepts students who are currently enrolled in University Programs (“Affiliated Students”).

Training Programs are Available for Fall, Spring and Summer* Terms. See below for application deadlines.

*Fieldwork Placements are NOT available in the Summer

Child Life Internship Program

The Chase Child Life Program offers a 600-hour clinical internship, under the direct supervision of experienced Certified Child Life Specialists. The internship curriculum is planned and implemented to address the Child Life Council Certification requirements. Students in the internship program will undergo rigorous training in preparation for their future careers and certification examinations.

All potential applicants should download and carefully review the Internship Requirements Packet prior to application submission. Applicants submit, by mail, the Common Internship Application, plus all supporting materials.

Child Life Practicum Program

The Chase Child Life Program offers 200-hour Practicum Placements for Undergraduate and Graduate students, who have not yet completed a Child Life Internship. The Child Life Practicum is designed to provide foundational skills in essential Therapeutic Play and Applied Child Development in the Healthcare Environment. Students will receive close supervision from experienced Certified Child Life Specialists. The practicum student’s goals and requirements are designed to address the Child Life Council's professional standards.

All potential applicants should download and carefully review the Practicum Application Packet prior to application submission. Applicants submit, by mail, the Application Packet, plus all supporting materials.

Child Life Fieldwork Program

The Chase Child Life Program offers fieldwork placements for undergraduate students. The Child Life Fieldwork Program is designed to meet the individual needs and interests of each student who plans to pursue a career with children. Students will receive training and close supervision from Certified Child Life Specialists. The practicum student's goals and requirements are designed to meet the academic standards of early childhood training programs.
