Pediatric Endocrinology Fellowship
Fellowship Program Overview
Our fellowship program has a long and distinguished history of clinical, research, and educational excellence. Tailored to the specific talents and interests of each trainee, this program excels in training individuals for successful careers in academic and clinical pediatric endocrinology. Our three-year training program strives to attract superb candidates with a high interest in academic medicine. We aim to tailor our curriculum to the needs of the individual, ensuring that fellows have a comprehensive foundation in clinical practice, while providing rich options for academic endeavors in research, teaching, and quality improvement.
Clinical Medicine Training
The clinical program consists of fellows providing consultation on endocrine problems in outpatient/inpatient settings at three facilities: UCLA Mattel Children's Hospital within the UCLA Ronald Reagan Medical Center, Santa Monica/UCLA Medical Center, Miller Women's and Children's Hospital. The UCLA Medical Center is a recognized top tertiary and quaternary referral center that receives patients nationally and internationally and provides outstanding educational opportunities. With a full complement of clinical capabilities, UCLA offers one of the few F-Dopa scanners in the nation integral in the evaluation of congenital hyperinsulinism. The nuclear medicine department offers full radioactive iodine services necessary in the treatment of hyperthyroidism and thyroid cancer. A portable ultrasound is readily available in our outpatient endocrinology clinic for the interrogation of thyroid glands. Fellows participate in various clinical conferences and take an active role in teaching/supervision of housestaff and medical students. Fellows develop competence in the recognition, diagnostic evaluation, and management of a broad spectrum of pediatric endocrine disorders, as outlined by the American Board of Pediatrics requirements for subspecialty certification in Pediatric Endocrinology. The program is structured to enable the fellow to advance from first through third year of training by applying his/her increasing knowledge base and skills, thus functioning more independently over time.
Scholarly Activity
Research training is individualized, and takes advantage of the rich research environment within the David Geffen School of Medicine and UCLA. Fellows have the opportunity to do their scholarly activity in a variety of settings, including top basic science labs, clinical research trials, and educational activities (link to research page). Research can be done within the division, or in collaboration with the thousands of researchers within UCLA. Our fellows attend the UCLA CTSI short course, which provides the tools to develop a clinical trial. Fellows have the opportunity to apply for the Janet and Ray Sherr Fellowship Loan Repayment program, the NIH Loan Repayment Program, and a number of T32 awards.
