Ten-year-old Logan loves sports. His top teams are Argentina for soccer, the New England Patriots for football, the Golden State Warriors for pro basketball and the Red Sox for baseball.
An athlete as well as a fan, Logan's dream is to play professional soccer. But he wouldn't mind also shooting hoops for the Bruins. "My favorite basketball team is definitely UCLA," he says.
Logan's journey took a turn at age 4 during a visit to the emergency room at UCLA Medical Center, Santa Monica. His mother, Kyrsha, noticed something was not right. His color and his energy were a little off. There was nothing major she could pinpoint, but something told her that it was worth a trip to the ER. She wanted to know what was wrong immediately.
The doctors performed blood work, x-rays and ultrasound on Logan, and within two hours the head of pediatric hematology/oncology arrived and introduced herself. The day was September 11, 2009.
Logan was diagnosed with a type of cancer of the blood and bone marrow called acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) . ALL is the most common childhood cancer.
"I just remember all the blood rushing out of my body," Kyrsha says of the moment the doctor broke the news.
In 2013, Logan relapsed and is currently receiving chemotherapy as an outpatient. Despite his serious illness, he still likes to have fun and brings sports wherever he goes including to his hospital room.
"Logan, who transforms his hospital room into a 'sports zone,' has been known to play a couple of wild games of basketball in the hospital, including when he was in the intensive care unit," says Hilary Gan, a child life specialist with the Chase Child Life program at UCLA Mattel Children's Hospital.
Logan's enthusiasm for sports has helped him win over the nurses, doctors and many friends in the hospital. His other unique quality is his generosity.
"Recently, he donated his birthday presents to the other children in the hospital," Hilary says. "He truly exemplifies the qualities of a 'Kid Captain' and is an inspiration to everyone."
