About Me

Dr. Michael Garcia is a fellow and Clinical Instructor of Medicine in the Division of Human Nutrition. He is board certified in internal medicine. 

Dr. Garcia’s primary areas of practice include using nutrition therapy for the prevention and treatment of cancer, gastrointestinal conditions, obesity, obesity-associated diseases, metabolic conditions including diabetes, high cholesterol, and cardiovascular disease. He prioritizes individualized care for each patient in collaboration with primary care physicians and other specialists.

Dr. Garcia is a native of Annapolis, Maryland. He received his undergraduate degree from Harvard College and his medical degree from the University of Maryland School of Medicine. He then completed his residency training in internal medicine at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, where he also served as Chief Medical Resident and hospitalist prior to joining the Division of Human Nutrition at UCLA.

    Blood pressure is the force of the blood pushing against the artery walls. The force is created with each heartbeat as blood is pumped from the heart into the blood vessels. Blood pressure is also affected by the size of the artery walls and how elastic they are. Each time the heart beats (contracts and relaxes), pressure is created inside the arteries. High blood pressure, or hypertension, increases the risk for coronary heart disease (heart attack) and stroke (brain attack).
