Mission Statement

The Department of Anesthesiology & Perioperative Medicine at UCLA sponsors a non-ACGME Fellowship in Perioperative Medicine with the mission of training board-eligible and board certified anesthesiologists in the management of the perioperative patient with a concentration on the Perioperative Surgical Home (PSH), Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS), and multidisciplinary perioperative management.

Perioperative Medicine Fellowship

Program Overview

The Fellowship in Perioperative Medicine at UCLA is a non-ACGME Fellowship organized into a program of rotations and educational experiences, both mandatory and elective, designed to provide each fellow with the opportunity to learn about perioperative medicine with a concentration on the PSH, ERAS, and perioperative management (clinical and administrative). Candidates for the fellowship are sought from physicians who are board certified or board eligible in anesthesiology, or anesthesiology residents currently in their CA-3 year of training. Learning in the areas listed below is accomplished through daily work in the perioperative environment, rounding, lectures, seminars, reading, research, committee work and time spent with experts and leaders from various departments at UCLA Health and the David Geffen School of Medicine.

The fellowship is 12 months in length, but may be modified at the discretion of the Program Director with the fellow's agreement. The fellowship is flexibly tailored to each candidate, based on individual needs and desires, and upon the current needs of the department. Fellows will complete and submit an approved project in an area of interest, which will be presented to the department at a Grand Rounds prior to graduation from the program.

Goals

  • Develop a practical understanding of how Perioperative Medicine, Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) and the Perioperative Surgical Home (PSH) model of care can be developed and integrated into the larger healthcare system, using a multidisciplinary approach.
  • Gain expertise in quality, safety, and perioperative information technologies in order to develop and evaluate perioperative clincal medicine and management initiatives (Digital Quality Improvement).
  • Build, develop, and monitor evidence-based clinical pathways using ERAS and the PSH model of care delivery.
  • Acquire leadership skills essential for initiating and managing changes in healthcare systems and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Achieve proficiency in the recognition and management of problems commonly encountered in the perioperative patient in the preoperative, intraoperative, post-operative and post-discharge phases of the surgical episode of care.
  • Gain experience with the supervision of medical students, residents, nurse practitioners, and nurses in the perioperative environment.
  • Have the opportunity to develop teaching and/or research skills as needed.
  • Gain experience and knowledge in perioperative management as it relates to operations management, risk management, quality assurance, patient safety, regulatory affairs, compliance, and billing and financial management.
  • Develop expertise as a Perioperative Medicine Consultant.
  • Understand the impact of perioperative medicine on population health.
  • Articulate the concepts of protocolized (reproducible) care pathways and individualized (precision) medicine.

We are currently accepting applications. For additional information, please contact the Fellowship Coordinator, Lucine Torosian, either by phone at (310) 267-8653 or via email at Ltorosian@mednet.ucla.edu.
