Patients in the UCLA Asian Liver Program receive the care of some of the finest and most-experienced hepatologists, surgeons, diagnostic and interventional radiologists and surgical-critical-care specialists in the country.  The nursing staff and other caregivers in the patient ward and Intensive Care Unit have experience in caring for patients with liver disease that exceeds what can be found in most other centers.

Hepatology Faculty

Dr. Myron Tong, MD, PhDMyron Tong, MD, PhD

Myron Tong received his Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of California, Berkley, and MD degree from the University of California, San Francisco. He completed his fellowship in hepatology at Los Angeles County-University of Southern California Medical Center, Los Angeles.

Dr. Tong served as a naval medical officer in Vietnam, and was attached to the U.S. Naval Medical Research Unit in Danang, where he was involved in studies of wars-related wounds and tropical diseases.

A world-leading hepatologist, Dr. Tong has specialized in liver-disease research and treatment for more than 25 years, with a distinguished record of service to the university and community. The first to link HBV infection with liver cancer, Dr. Tong is one of the leading clinical investigators on HBV and liver diseases in Asians in the U.S. and Asia. Dr. Tong's research efforts include anti-viral treatment of patients with hepatitis B and hepatitis C, and he is heavily involved in the treatment of patients with hepatocellular carcinoma at UCLA.

 

Dr. Steven-Huy HanSteven-Huy Han, MD

Steven-Huy Han received his undergraduate degree in biochemistry from the University of California, Berkeley, and attended medical school at Albany Medical College in Albany, New York, where he received his MD degree. Following a residency in internal medicine at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center and Stanford University, Dr. Han completed a clinical fellowship in hepatology at the University of Southern California. He then trained at the University of California, Los Angeles, where he completed a clinical fellowship in gastroenterology and transplant hepatology. Dr. Han is an associate clinical professor in the Division of Digestive Diseases and the Division of Liver and Pancreas Transplantation. In addition to his patient-care responsibilities in liver transplantation, Dr. Han plays an active role in the clinical training of medical students, medical residents and subspecialty fellows.

Dr. Han is the director of the Hepatology Clinical Research Center and assistant director of the UCLA Asian Liver Program. His research interests have focused on the treatment of chronic viral hepatitis, the prevention of recurrent viral hepatitis after liver transplantation and the treatment of fulminant liver failure. He is the principal investigator on multiple clinical studies involving treatment of chronic hepatitis B and C and acute liver failure. He has published many articles in the area of viral hepatitis and liver transplantation, and is an active speaker, lecturing on these subjects to patients and physicians both locally and nationally.

Dr. Ronald W. Busuttil is currently professor and executive chairman of the UCLA Department of Surgery and holds the William P. Longmire, Jr. Chair in Surgery.  Additionally, he serves as founding chief of the Division of Liver and Pancreas Transplantation and director of the Pfleger Liver Institute, which includes the Dumont-UCLA Transplant Center and the Dumont-UCLA Liver Cancer Center. 

After graduating magna cum laude from Loyola University in New Orleans, Dr. Busuttil earned both his MD and PhD. degrees at Tulane University. He served his surgical residency at UCLA under Dr. William P. Longmire, Jr., and was trained in transplantation by Dr. Thomas Starzl at the University of Pittsburgh.  He has been a member of the UCLA surgical faculty since 1978.

In 1984, he established the UCLA Liver Transplant Program, and has been the director and chief surgeon for over two decades. The program has grown to become one of the largest liver-transplant centers in the world.  Clinical activities encompass the entire spectrum of liver transplantation and hepatobiliary surgery for adults and children. Dr. Busuttil and his team have performed nearly 5,000 liver transplants, and he is internationally recognized for his expertise in liver transplantation and liver surgery.

In addition to his pioneering accomplishments in surgery, Dr. Busuttil has demonstrated a life-long commitment to teaching and advancing the field of transplantation and surgery.  His training program in liver transplantation is viewed as one of the foremost in the world. He has trained over 180 transplant surgeons from the U.S. and abroad, many who currently lead programs in the U.S., Asia and Europe. His contributions have been recognized through many awards and honors, most notably the American Surgical Association Medallion for Scientific Achievement.

Dr. Busuttil serves on the editorial boards or as a reviewer for many prestigious journals, and is the co-editor of the definitive textbook, Transplantation of the Liver, now in its second edition.  He has authored more than 600 peer, reviewed scientific manuscripts, 60 book chapters and 490 abstracts.

He is an active member of all major national and international surgical and transplantation societies, and is the current president of the International Liver Transplantation Society, as well as being a past-president of the American Society of Transplant Surgeons and member of the board of directors of United Network for Organ Sharing.

Christopher Loh, MDChristopher Loh, MD

Christopher Loh is an assistant clinical professor of radiology at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. He attended medical school at The University of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, where he received his MD degree. Following a residency in radiology at St. Vincent Medical Center, NY, Dr. Loh completed a neuroradiology fellowship at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Los Angeles. Dr. Loh board certified by the American Board of Radiology, a diplomate of American Board of Radiology and a fellow of the Royal College of Physician and Surgeons, Canada. Prior to his arrival at UCLA, Dr. Loh served as chairman of his radiology group in Pensacola, FL, and was a clinical assistant professor of radiology at Stanford University Medical Center. Dr. Loh's clinical interest includes Interventional Oncology procedures: Chemoembolization, Yttrium Therapy and Radiofrequency ablation.

Steven S. Raman is an associate professor of radiology at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. He received his MD degree from USC, where he graduated with highest distinction. He finished a residency in diagnostic and interventional radiology at UC San Diego, where he was chief resident.  After finishing his fellowship in abdominal imaging and intervention at UCLA, he was invited to join the faculty, where he currently serves as director of the Abdominal Imaging Fellowship.Dr Raman is board certified by the American Board of Radiology.

Dr. Raman's varied clinical interests include research in CT and MRI and image-guided tumor ablation. He has numerous peer-reviewed publications and book chapters.  Dr. Raman is principal investigator for several grants, and has collaborated as co-principal investigator on several studies.
