PHI and Email
Is it okay to send sensitive health information via email?Generally this should not be done unless the email is encrypted or sent in another highly secure manner. Sensitive health information such as that dealing with mental health, chemical dependency, sexually transmitted diseases, HIV or other highly personal information should not be transmitted via unsecure email. Other, more appropriate venues should be utilized for distributing this information such as telephone (Reference Policy 9453-A – Use of Electronic Mail in Communication of PHI).
