Vaccines

Hepatitis B Vaccine

The vaccination is recommended for

  • All susceptible hemodialysis patients
  • Patients soon to start dialysis
  • Peritoneal or home dialysis patients in case they need hemodialysis

Dosage

Higher vaccine dosage is required for immunosuppressed and hemodialysis patients since standard dosage has been found to be less likely to result in the necessary antibody levels for these patients.

Serologic Testing

The vaccination should ideally be tested in hemodialysis patients 1-2 months after the last vaccine dose to ensure effectiveness of the vaccine.

Booster Doses

Annual antibody counts should be performed to ensure booster doses are administered as required.

Influenza Vaccines

Inactivated Influenza Vaccine

  • Annual vaccination is recommended for everyone older than 6 months.

Live, Attenuated Influenza Vaccine – CONTRAINDICATED

  • Those at greater risk of complications of influenza infections should NOT take the LAIV vaccine

Pneumococcal Vaccines

23-Valent Pneumococcal Polysaccharide Vaccine (PPSV23)

  • It is recommended that high risk adults between the ages of 19 and 64 get this vaccination and a booster 5 years after for immunocompromised individuals or those suffering with asplenia (abnormal spleen function).

13-Valent Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine (PCV13)

  • Regular use of the vaccine is recommended for those aged 19 and above suffering with immunocompromising conditions, asplenia, cerebrospinal fluid leaks or cochlear implants.
