Eligibility

Applicants must meet the following requirements by the residency appointment date:

  • Graduation from a Liaison Committee for Medical Education (LCME)-accredited medical school in the United States or Canada
  • Satisfactory completion of an approved internship in medicine or surgery
  • Satisfactory completion of the USMLE, Part 3

Graduates of foreign medical schools may be considered for residency appointments if they obtain a Status Letter of Evaluation or California licensure from the Medical Board of California. Specific information regarding medical licensure is available from the Medical Board of California.

Applicants who are not United States citizens must possess an Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) J-1 clinical visa to be eligible for residency training. Information about UCLA-sponsored visas is available on our Graduate Medical Education website:

Application Requirements
Applicants to the Ophthalmology Residency Program at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA must register through the Ophthalmology Matching Program (OMP). The Central Application Service (CAS), which is an automatic part of the OMP registration, distributes applications to the programs specified. Any application not received directly from the CAS cannot be considered. The Stein Eye Institute Residency Selection Office must receive applications by September 24.

Applicants to the EyeSTAR Program must submit additionally an EyeSTAR Program Application along with three (3) EyeSTAR Program Evaluation Forms and letters of recommendation. These should be sent directly to the Stein Eye Institute EyeSTAR Program following the instructions on the forms. The program coordinator must receive all CAS applications by September 24 and supplemental application materials by October 1.

Interviews 
Applicants selected for personal interviews with members of the Resident Selection Committee are notified by phone starting October 30.
