Systems biology is a new interdisciplinary science that derives from biology, mathematics, computer science, physics, engineering and other disciplines. A systems biology approach could integrate high throughput "omic" data, derived from human biomaterials, aiming to identify the central regulators (hubs) of disease pathogenesis, thus allowing the identification of novel drug targets. We are partnering with under-resourced schools in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) program to expose and mentor future scientists. The STEM program at UCLA is tailored for middle and high school students coming from the Fulfillment Fund. The Fulfillment Fund is a Los Angeles based non-profit organization that seeks to prepare students for college through classroom instruction, mentoring and experiential learning opportunities.
