From 2008 to 2014, ECMO use in the United States has seen a drastic increase in nearly all indications. Although ECMO has been in use since 1972, the complexity of the devices and physician skillsets precluded its widespread use for several decades. This Figure from our group’s investigation of national trends in ECMO use illustrates the rapid growth of this technology across the U.S. with a nearly five-fold increase in the past eight years. The growth for various indications are also shown here.
