Nonprescription products such as dietary supplements and beauty products may be sold in UCLA outpatient clinics.
We recommend the following in connection with any such sales:
- DISPLAY: Products and any promotional materials relating to such products should only be displayed in public waiting areas.
- DISCLAIMER: A disclaimer should be placed in the display area stating "UCLA obtains a financial benefit from the sale of these products."
- NO VERBAL PROMOTION: If a patient asks a question about displayed products, the physician should give an objective response and state that other options are available to the patient. Physicians should not promote the products to their patients.
- ACCOUNTING: Sales of such products may be considered taxable and should be accounted for in accordance with University tax policies.
