Dr. DiFiori serves as Chief of the Division of Sports Medicine and Non-Operative Orthopaedics for the Departments of Family Medicine and Orthopaedic Surgery at UCLA.
He serves as Head Team Physician for the UCLA Department of Intercollegiate Athletics, overseeing the care of more than 650 athletes in 24 NCAA sports. Dr. DiFiori has more than 23 years of team physician experience at UCLA. He is on the sidelines with the Bruins’ Football and Men’s Basketball programs.
Dr. DiFiori also serves as the Director of Sports Medicine for the NBA, where he oversees the League’s research initiatives, and the development and implementation of all policies related to player health and safety.
Dr. DiFiori is a former President of the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine. He is also a fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine.
He serves on the editorial boards of Current Sports Medicine Reports and the Clinical Journal of Sport Medicine. He has been appointed by the United States Anitdoping Association to serve on its Therapeutic Use Exemption Committee.
Dr. DiFiori has served as a medical consultant for the NHL Players Association, and is a member of the U.S.A. Gymnastics physician referral network. He has served for the USOC as a U.S. team physician for several international competitions.
Dr. DiFiori’s expertise in treating sports injuries in competitive athletes is nationally recognized. He is the lead author for the recently published AMSSM Position Statement on Overuse Injuries and Burnout in Youth Sports. He is a co-author of the Preparticipation Evaluation textbook, which is the guidebook for the medical screening of competitive athletes. He has performed research and published extensively regarding early single sport specialization.
Dr. DiFiori has extensive experience in the management of sports-related concussion, ranging from immediate sideline assessment to the monitoring of recovery and determining return to play. He has authored several publications and provided a number of national presentations on sports-related concussion. He is a Co-Primary Investigator for UCLA for the NCAA-Department of Defense Concussion study, the largest study ever conducted on sports-related concussion.
Dr DiFiori has authored multiple scientific articles, case reports, and book chapters on a variety of sports medicine issues. He has provided more than 100 scientific presentations, and is regularly invited to speak at national sports medicine academic meetings.
His sports medicine practice at UCLA includes patients of all ages for the evaluation of sports-related injuries and medical problems. He also maintains a family medicine practice, providing care for patients with a wide variety of medical problems, as well as general health maintenance and preventive care..
